London Review: Fischer’s in Marylebone

Fischer’s: Old world European elegance, or overpriced, over processed food?

Marylebone, high street is one of my favourite parts of London. Just 5 minutes away from Selfridges , it is in fact a quick and easy way to get to Regents park – far and away from the crowds of central London.

Fischer’s is in Marylebone, and that is pretty much all it has to recommend itself.

The interiors are authentic looking to bring us into the refined world of Austrian cafes at the turn of the century. You know the sort of thing: décor with old-world charm, dark wood paneling, plush leather banquettes, and vintage light fixtures casting an inviting warm glow over the space. The ambiance is classic Viennese coffeehouse, perfect for lingering over a leisurely meal or sipping on a cup of good coffee- you’d think!

That is where the dream ends. There will be no ‘lingering’ – busy times mean customers are allocated an hour and a half slot! Hurry up and pay up.

There will be no ‘sipping’ of Viennese quality coffee either. Despite the café’s cozy atmosphere, the quality of the coffee leaves much to be desired. I can do better at home with a jar of instant coffee from sainsburys.

Similarly disappointing is the apple strudel, a classic Austrian dessert that should be a highlight of any meal at Fischer’s. Sadly the apple strudel also misses the mark, leaving me longing for the crisp, flaky pastry and sweet, spiced apples of a true Viennese strudel. ‘Shall we book a weekend in Vienna?’ said my husband looking at it mournfully. ‘Oh yes, let’s stay at Hotel Sacher Wien, or the Imperial! ’ I retorted. It may actually cost about the same as a three-course meal at Fischer’s.

Despite these drawbacks, Fischer’s does have an air of old world European elegance. The ambiance is undeniably charming, but I can recommend neither the coffee nor the food to you dear blog readers and friends.

If any of the management of the Wolseley group reads this: Please, I implore you – at the very least sort the coffee out and get a pastry chef.

  1. There is simply no excuse for lousy coffee! And I’m amazed they stay in business, given all the competition in London. If you haven’t already, I suggest you post a review on Yelp, Fork etc. Restaurant owners do tend to look at these.

    1. yes! I looked at the reviews on yelp – they seem mostly positive though. I can only conclude that people were mesmerised by the attractiveness of the decor. The place is consistently busy. Same as the Wolseley – they rely on their old reputation.
